Barefoot Boot Camp
OK, I just completed my trial week of yoga classes with a doozy, a class called "Bikram 90", which is a 90 minute Hot Yoga class that takes place in a room set at 105 degrees. Though most of my focus was on my breath and balance in Monday's class, my sarcastic muse kept thinking: "I've seen this before...torture scene from '24', perhaps?"
Yet, despite the fact that I was tapping dormant muscles, striking stances uncommon to the frame of the 6'1"/195 demographic, and perspiring like fat Elvis in a polyester jump suit, I also felt quite good.
Yoga has the same vibe to me as karate and meditation - and by that I mean, they are all somewhat impossible to 'master'. You can spend your whole life practicing, but never perfect that practice. I like that - a moving finish line. Makes me feel like Coltrane trying to find God through Jazz. Keep playing the notes, keep chasing the divine, and know that it's the pursuit, not the attainment, that carves out who you become.
So, despite the fact that I sweated so much in Hot Yoga that my mat turned into a Slip 'n Slide, that I'm the lone dorky guy in a roomful of fit women, I'm sticking with it. Because despite whatever comical downside there may be, there's a cosmic upside: health, focus, confidence, and exhilaration!
